Fast fashion's sense of fashion has gotten out of hand once again as popular clothing brand H&M has pissed off its desi customers.
For most of us, wearing a kurta is a very basic desi thing to do. However, H&M's new 'product' is making us question that who comes up with these ideas. Also, aren't we already very tired of cultural appropriation? By now, everyone knows it is absolutely unacceptable. However, looks like?Swedish multinational clothing company H&M did not get the memo.
H&M is calling a "Jersey Shirt Dress" and it's part of its Plus Size fashion segment, H&M+. It is a simple button-up kurta paired with a pyjama. However, the description of the product says it is a "Calf-length dress in soft jersey. Collar, buttons at front, and yoke at back with box pleat. Long sleeves with buttons at cuffs. Slits at sides of hem. Unlined."
The 'dress' part is priced at $34.99 (Rs 2,605) and needless to say, it has not gone too well with the 'target' audience.?
Unimpressed people took to Twitter to express their views on the 'dress'.?
One user wrote, "I'm crying what is every brown uncle's masjid fit doing on h&m."
Another replied to the same thread and commented, "For a moment I really thought H&M have started designing the Masjid Outfits."
"I honestly think HM is just getting lazier every season. This doesn't even fit properly," wrote a third user.?
Here are some more reactions:
Earlier this year, luxury label Gucci launched its own ¡®range of kaftans¡¯ at an exorbitant price. The fancy kurta was priced at a whopping $3,500, roughly translating to Rs 2.5 lakh. Called the ¡°organic linen kaftan¡± with floral embroidery, the kurta is made in Italy. The linen kaftan has a neck opening with a self-tie tassel.
The description for the silk kaftan reads, ¡°Filled with ¡®60s and ¡®70s influences, the kaftan reinterprets the aesthetic of the hippie movement with a new take on relaxed garments in light fabrics. For this new iteration, the emblematic Interlocking G motif mixes with a stripe chain print elevating the ivory silk fabric."??
Just like people aren't impressed right now, they were very happy with this product either and the luxury brand was called out for cultural appropriation.?
