It's true, lazy folks often get a bad reputation. Teachers often use the phrase "They're bright, but use their gifts" at parent-teacher meetings. But usually, this cliche doesn't help the student much since it's basically saying they're not putting in enough effort, which can sound like they're being called lazy.
However, a study suggested that their lack of activity might actually be a sign of how smart they are.
The research, now going viral, was conducted by Florida Gulf Coast University.
The research discovered that individuals with higher IQs tend to be less physically active compared to those with lower IQs. Smart folks often lean toward mentally engaging activities while giving exercise less priority.
The hypothesis of the study suggests that intelligent individuals are less prone to boredom, leading them to spend more time in intellectually stimulating pursuits. However, activities like reading or solving crosswords, while beneficial for the mind, don't contribute much to physical activity.
On the other hand, active individuals seek external activities to ward off boredom since they are more likely to get bored easily and need continuous stimulation.
In the study, researchers divided participants into two groups based on a cognition test: thinkers and non-thinkers. Tracking their activity using fitness devices for a week revealed that the "thinkers" were less active on weekdays and showed little variation in activity levels on weekends.
In order to help the smarter, likely lazy people, the British Psychological Society said, ¡°Ultimately, an important factor that may help more thoughtful individuals combat their lower average activity levels is awareness.¡±
