When trying to rent or buy a home, people encounter a variety of unusual situations. These occurrences are especially common when landlords face unique and bizarre demands from tenants. But the opposite is also true; at times it's the brokers and landlords who make bizarre demands.
Recently, a man house-hunting in Delhi faced a similar challenge when a broker asked him to pay Rs 2,500 for a 'visiting card' to enter the society in order to inspect a potential house.
A Reddit user with the handle @zenpraxis wrote about the incident on the platform. He posted a screenshot of the chat and asked, "Is this a scam?" House hunting in Delhi."?
According to the screenshot, the home is located in Sarita Vihar. The monthly rent for this fully furnished one-bedroom-hall-kitchen is Rs 15,000. The broker instructed the user to apply for a visiting card from the society.?
The broker told the man to share his Aadhar card number, WhatsApp number, photograph, and phone number along with a Rs 2,500 fee in order to get the visitor card.
"The visiting charge is ?2500. If you enjoy the flat, ? 2500 will be removed from your rent. If you do not like the flat, your ? 2500 will be returned," the broker continued.?
Since being shared, the post has received 96% upvotes and a range of replies.?
"I'm looking for a place to stay, and this is the second time something like this has occurred. I declined the first time. Also, give professional advice on finding a place (1bhk/1rk, not PG) and assist a struggling brother," the user stated in the picture.?
"Yes, this is a major swindle. Is it necessary to have a card when visiting the society? Mannat thodi hai (Why do you need it for a social visit? It's not Shah Rukh Khan's mansion, Mannat)" commented one user.?
"A basic rule of thumb. Anyone asking for money is a scam," said one participant.A third person commented: "Common scam in Bangalore, now in Delhi!! There is never a visiting fee," said one person.?
"Anybody who says you pay X amount, it'll be returned to you, is scamming you," said one person. Check out the reddit post below.
