Nobody likes losing money be it any amount, big or small. But imagine losing a check for millions of dollars. Sounds like the worst nightmare anyone can ever come across. Well, a candy-making company recently lost a cheque for $4.7 million.
Don't worry they got it back when a man found it and returned it. Why are we talking about this? Because what the giant company did as a 'thank you' for the man was rather strange, ungenerous and "cheap." Here's what happened.
Haribo, an American candy-making company, had lost its $4.7 million cheque that was coming in from a supermarket. A German man found it on a railway platform and like a good citizen he returned the cheque to the company. Initially, he was very shocked at the large sum written on the cheque.?
The German man, identified as 38-year-old Anouar G, was travelling back home after a visit with his mother when he saw the cheque on a train platform.?According to?The Independent, he said that he saw the cheque fluttering on the floor.
Upon taking a closer look at the cheque he realised that it was for $4.7 million. He couldn't believe his eyes.?"There was such a large sum on it that I couldn't even pronounce it," he told the German tabloid Bild. He also revealed that the cheque was made out to Haribo from Rewe, a German supermarket.?
Despite doing a great thing for the company, the man got a "cheap" gift in return. As a good Samaritan, after spotting the cheque and learning who it was for, Anouar G reached out to the candy-making company to inform them that he had found the cheque. The company then asked him to destroy the cheque and send proof that he did so, the 38-year-old reportedly said.?
As requested, he destroyed the cheque and sent evidence of the same back to the company. Anouar then received a gift pack from the company. He said that he was surprised to receive six packs of Haribo products a few days later. But the treats from the company didn't give him any joy.?
"I thought that was a bit cheap," he said.
Responding to his comment, the company defended itself by saying that it was their "standard package that we send as a thank you."?
They further added, "Since it was a named check, nobody but our company could have redeemed it. It was our standard package that we send as a thank you," the company stated, as per the outlet.
