Radhika Parekh dialed a number listed for Star Wine shop which she found on Google for alcohol stores in Powai. She was requested by the store staff over the phone to make the payment of Rs 420 on Google Pay, reports IANS.
After getting the notification, a frantic Parekh called and the staff apologized for it and claimed it to be a mistake.?
The complainant then tried to locate the liquor shop by repeatedly calling the same number which was "not reachable", said an officer with Powai police station.
After the incident, a case under relevant sections of cheating under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology (IT) Act have been registered.?
For those unaware, Google Pay will now send app notifications as well as SMS to inform users each time they receive a collect request to highlight that approving the request will deduct money from their bank accounts.
Google Pay comes equipped with several of Google's security infrastructure including scam protections. However, in case of suspicious activity, always call the legal and official numbers of call centres if there any issue with the transactions carried out.?
