Wildlife enthusiasts recently found a washed-up 'creature of the deep' that was described as looking like "something out of Alien."
A frequent beachgoer turned to the Facebook group 'Field Naturalists Club of Victoria' to identify a strange-looking creature she discovered at Step Beach in Fairhaven, Australia.?
"Found in the rock pools," the user wrote. "It was kinda hard, plant-like..."The post soon garnered attention, with many claiming it resembled the chocolate woman from SpongeBob SquarePants or even a "placenta."
The skilled naturalists quickly identified the object. They claimed it was most likely a sea tulip, a creature with lumps and bumps due to the encrusting sponge on its surface.?
It can be found as deep as 262 feet in coastal waters. They emerge from the rocks with a tall stem. It is a filter feeder, thus it pumps water in and out of its siphons to remove its meal, plankton.
Commenters remarked that the creature is frequently seen in the area, with "lots at Anglesea reef at the moment".However, they did not hesitate to admit how bizarre they were at first sight.?"When I first saw these they were en masse and looked like something out of Alien!" stated one of them.?
"Note to self: Sea tulips look uncannily like a brain with a spinal cord still attached," one person wrote.?"Well now I know what the old lady from the chocolate episode of SpongeBob was meant to be," a user said with a giggle. Check out the original post here.
