In Christian Nolen's case, playing the guitar after surgery allowed surgeons to observe and secure his hand skills. Nolen's surgery, scheduled ten days after the tumor was discovered, surprised him when specialists suggested he stay awake and play the guitar.?
Dr. Komotar noted that staying awake gave them real-time feedback on brain activity, making the surgery safer.

Given Nolen's interest for guitar playing, it proved to be an appropriate instrument for tracking the tumor's impact on his motor skills. When a tumor is adjacent to a critical portion of the brain that controls functions such as speaking, understanding language, or movement, the recommended technique is to do the surgery while the patient is conscious.?
According to Komotar, this enables constant monitoring in order to detect any potential disruptions to normal brain activities as soon as possible. When the patient is anesthetized and unconscious, the surgical team cannot receive quick input.
