When you think of a giraffe, what comes to mind? Its long neck or even its thick tongue. Chief among all, a giraffe is best known for its dotted skin. The tapestry of brown squared spots on a creme canvas is what giraffes are popularly known for among their exotic kin.
However, it seems a lone new giraffe is changing up the scene.
A giraffe was recently born without any spots in a Tennessee Zoo in the USA. From the pictures, we can tell that the one-of-a-kind creature definitely stands out. While she is a giraffe like any other, she does steal the "spotlight" with her spotless body. Unlike most giraffes, she is fully covered in deep brown skin, something that has yet to be seen anywhere else in the world.
Even though she has no name yet, the newborn giraffe is already the star of the lot. The patchless giraffe was born on July 31 at Bright¡¯s Zoo, which is a privately owned facility in Limestone. The 6-foot?giraffe?made her public debut this month and shocked everyone on the internet with her spotless skin.
The zoo claimed that the newborn giraffe might be the "only solid-colored reticulated giraffe living anywhere on the planet." According to?CBS News, the last giraffe born without spots in captivity would likely have been one born at Tokyo¡¯s Ueno Zoo in 1972.
On a giraffe, the spots mainly function as camouflage in the savannas of northern Kenya, where the giraffe are originally from. The Giraffe Conservation Foundation explains that underneath each spot there exists a "sophisticated system of blood vessels," and it takes an extensive network of vessels along with hearts weighing 25 pounds (11 kg) to keep the world¡¯s tallest mammal on its hooves.
The Zoo's founder, Tony Bright, is glad that the giraffe is helping them spread awareness about giraffe conservation. There has been a 50% decline in the last 30 years in the giraffe population in the wild on the continent.
Besides spreading awareness, the?zoo is also letting people decide what name to give the newborn star.
