A professor at Texas A&M-Commerce failed over half of his students after the AI program ChatGPT falsely claimed to have written their papers. As a result, the university has decided to hold back their diplomas.
In his email, he stated that he had tested whether any students had used the ChatGPT software to write their essays by submitting three of their recent assignments to the AI bot.

"I copy and paste your responses in this account, and Chat GTP will tell me if the program generated the content," Mumm, who teaches agricultural sciences and natural resources, wrote in the email, misspelling Chat GPT.
"I put everyone's last three assignments through two separate times, and if they were both claimed by Chat GTP, you received a 0," he added.?
Unfortunately, ChatGPT is not programmed to recognize content generated by artificial intelligence, including its own. However, other programs, like Winston AI and Content at Scale, can identify such content.
In a subsequent post, DearKick mentioned that several students contacted Dr. Mumm, providing him with timestamped Google Docs to prove they did not use ChatGPT.
However, the professor?"ignored the emails, instead only relying on their grading software in the remarks: 'I don't grade AI bullshit."?DearKick wrote.
DearKick also mentioned that one student was cleared of wrongdoing, and Dr. Mumm apologized to them.?
Additionally, two other students confessed to using ChatGPT earlier in the semester, which "no doubt greatly complicates the situation for those who did not," they added.?
Texas A&M-Commerce told Insider: "University officials are investigating the incident and developing policies to address the use or misuse of AI technology in the classroom."?
"A&M-Commerce confirms that no students failed the class or were barred from graduating because of this issue. Dr. Jared Mumm, the class professor, is working individually with students regarding their last written assignments," they added.
The utilization of AI technology in education has sparked debate. While certain schools in Texas have prohibited students from using ChatGPT, others are exploring ways to integrate the AI chatbot into their educational practices.
