A massive project aims to construct and set up the Regional Rapid Transport System (RRTS) that connects New Delhi to Meerut through Ghaziabad. For the project, the central government has approved the construction of this project worth Rs 30,274 crore.
Once the project is complete, the 82-kilometre stretch between Delhi and Meerut will be covered in less than an hour by a high-speed rail and green public transit system.
The approval of the project was given at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The project is a first-of-its-kind, rail-based, high-speed regional transit system to be implemented in India. Once the project is operational it will be the fastest and most comfortable mode of transportation in New Delhi.
"The Cabinet has approved construction of Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) covering a distance of 82.15 kilometres," Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said after the meeting. Of the 82.15 km, 68.03 km would be elevated and 14.12 km will be underground.
It will also reduce pollution and road congestion taking more than one lakh private vehicles off-road, an official said. ?
"RRTS stations will be seamlessly integrated with other transport modes like the airport, railway, metro, ISBTs and will be inter-operable ensuring that change of train is not required for moving from one RRTS corridor to another," the NCRTC stated in a statement.
There are two more projects coming up apart from this project - Delhi-Gurugram-Alwar and Delhi-Panipat corridors.
