Back in 2019, 28-year-old Sampson Dahl had no idea how a former laundry shop in Maspeth, Queens, would become his life until he came across it on an online forum.?After his apartment, which was formerly a laundromat (a laundry shop), went viral on TikTok, the millennial has shared that he pays Rs 1.5 per month rent (approx $1900).
The 28-year-old had interacted with CNBC, mentioning that his rent has since 2019 gone up to $1,900 (approx Rs 1.5 lakh) from the $1,850 he was paying at the time.
Dahl had access to a lot of the furniture and d¨¦cor you see throughout his apartment because he worked as a TV and film set designer at the beginning of 2023. However, the Writers Guild of America strike put a stop to any new work and made Dahl reconsider the strange home he had built.?
¡°I¡¯ve gotten to focus on the space a lot, so I¡¯ve been throwing shows, events, and intimate gatherings almost weekly at this point,¡± Dahl said. ¡°It¡¯s been a great opportunity to kind of dive into the space more.¡±

Dahl claims that even though he doesn't make much money from the events, the money he does make from the door charge is sufficient to cover his rent each month and keep him living alone.?Dahl claimed last year that the only reason he lives in the laundry shop is because it's his only source of income. Dahl claims that he is now considering moving more intently. "I wish not to stay there indefinitely. In my ideal situation, I would go, not give it much thought, and then, ten years later, I would surprise myself by returning," he says.
Dahl believes he might be ready for a more conventional apartment, even though he has enjoyed living in an unconventional space.?

He does not, however, plan to entirely abandon the old laundry shop. ¡°My goal with this space is just to keep it existing, and I think that my friends have no ulterior mission to make a functioning business out of it,¡± Dahl says. ¡°I¡¯m not against utilizing it as a storefront but I think the neighbors appreciate having a space that adds a different mood. The block I live on informs me and a certain pace of life. Most of my neighbors are retirees and the laundromat is the same.¡±
When Dahl does move, he says he¡¯ll miss his neighbors and hosting old and new friends in his home at all hours of the day. ¡°I love them so much,¡± he says.
¡°I¡¯d love to live across the street. I¡¯ve been looking for years and always keep my eye on the block.¡±?
Living in such an unconventional space has helped Dahl learn to enjoy his home for what it is now instead of trying to turn it into something bigger. ¡°In a place that values commercial success and economic growth, it¡¯s rare to be able to enjoy stasis in a place like this,¡± Dahl says.
¡°I think the greatest thing I¡¯ve found living in the laundromat is providing a room where someone can exist without direct purpose.¡±
