The LCHs, also known as Prachand, are the world's only attack helicopters that can land and take off at an altitude of 5,000 meters (16,400 ft), making them ideal for operations in the high-altitude areas of the Siachen glacier and Eastern Ladakh. They can fire a range of air-to-ground and air-to-air missiles and can destroy enemy air defence operations.
The government has been focusing on self-reliance in defence manufacturing through the Make in India initiative as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission.
In April this year, the Defence Ministry issued a tender to HAL for the purchase of 97 made-in-India LCA Mark 1A fighter jets, expected to be worth over Rs 65,000 crore.
