Rivera, who used to work part-time as an online tutor, started his entrepreneurial journey in 2023 when he noticed a decrease in demand for tutoring services. Inspired by a YouTube video about print-on-demand (POD) side hustles, he decided to create an online business. Using tools like Canva for design and Printify for POD services, he handled design, online listings, and manufacturing and fulfillment outsourcing.
Rivera's Etsy shop yielded profits of 30% to 50% per sale after deducting expenses like Etsy fees and marketing costs. What's surprising is that Rivera mentioned his business requires minimal time investment; he spends only 20 minutes a day on research and design. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed to a media outlet, "I¡¯m making more than I ever have, and doing less than I ever have."
Rivera highlighted the low-risk aspect of print-on-demand, mentioning that his business model is easily replicable. He chose candles as his niche due to their potential for growth and popularity as gift items on Etsy. However, he also pointed out challenges within the business, such as people replicating his designs and phrases, which he considers a significant downside. Rivera expressed, "The biggest downside of this side hustle is copycats ¨C people who use the same phrases or very similar designs."
