In what can be tagged under bizarre news, Mr Bean actor Rowan Atkinson has been blamed for the slump in the sale of electric cars in the UK.?
Atkinson was mentioned in a recent meeting of the House of Lords, the upper house of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, specifically during discussions in its environment and climate change committee.
During the meeting, the think tank Green Alliance addressed the challenges faced by the UK government in transitioning away from petrol and diesel cars by 2035. According to Sky News, the think tank attributed part of the difficulties to an article written by the actor, considering it detrimental to the cause.?
The actor had made the controversial comment in June 2023.
The think tank conveyed to the House of Lords, as reported by Sky News: "One of the most damaging articles was a comment piece written by Rowan Atkinson in The Guardian, which has been roundly debunked. Unfortunately, fact checks never reach the same breadth of audience as the original false claim, emphasizing the need to ensure high editorial standards around the net zero transition."
The actor's article, titled "I love electric vehicles - and was an early adopter. But increasingly I feel duped," expressed concerns about electric vehicles, describing them as "a bit soulless." The piece also criticized the use of lithium-ion batteries in EVs.
One user wrote on X, ¡°One man does not make the show. Rowan Atkinson is also an engineer and he speaks the truth. EVs are big piles of steaming excrement . We all knew that years before Rowan said anything .¡±
¡°Rowan Atkinson is correct. Where do they think the power comes from to charge the cars and run the factories that produce the cars? It's all coal power. Our society can't run on renewables. EV cars are not environmentally friendly when their whole life span is taken into account,¡± wrote another user.
A third user said, ¡°Rowan Atkinson is spot on with his view and analysis of EV transition from petrol.? The ¡°think tank¡± and their grevience against Atkinson only proves his view merits serious consideration by a government intent on population control!¡±
