A leaked email, allegedly sent by a partner at a Mumbai-based law firm, reprimanding three junior employees, has started discussions on professional conduct and unhealthy work environments.?
A senior lawyer at the firm appeared upset with three of her colleagues for their behavior and for delivering poor-quality work. She specifically named the three colleagues individually in an email sent to several team members.?
In the email sent on March 19, the partner began by mentioning a case where there were errors in the market share annexure. She apologised to the case officer but expressed embarrassment as their firm was known for its excellent work.?
Addressing the three associates, she wrote, "You three maharathis have achieved what no one before you has ¨C shame us and make us look like morons. You know that my ask is limited ¨C Never let me look like a fool."?
She even accused one of the associates for office politics, of being disrespectful towards seniors and of bullying his colleagues.?
"You poison the team with your so called sarcasm and passive aggressiveness directed at your seniors. You are insulting of your team-mates (and you have no reason to be, none at all), disrespectful, and carry the crowd against individuals who will not respond at the low level you play at/cannot respond to you," she said.?
She also used terms like 'heropanti' and 'moronic lack of respect.'?

The Internet was quick to call out the toxicity.?
One said, "I mean is anyone surprised at the language of the email? Law as a profession have normalised berating, privately and publicly, of junior lawyers to the extent that we are told to suck it up. A lot of lawyers consider it a matter of pride to demean their juniors.Deride and call out toxicity, workplace abuse and horrible work culture and conditions."?
Another suggested, "Judicial overhaul and then lawyer system overhaul."?
Someone else relegated the problem to the manager being an Indian, saying, "This is why people want a non Indian manager above them. I have worked with Indian managers and non Indians too. I will pick non Indian everytime even with a pay cut."??
