In the fast-paced world of food delivery, choosing between a delicious naan or a tempting dessert can be a tough decision. Imagine it¡¯s Friday night, and you¡¯re ready to treat yourself. You open the Zomato app, debating whether to order your favorite garlic naan or a slice of cheesecake. Zomato's CEO, Deepinder Goyal, has introduced a new feature designed to help users make better food decisions. This innovative tool subtly suggests healthier alternatives when placing orders, like recommending roti instead of naan.
According to Goyal, the new feature has already seen a 7% attachment rate, with users responding positively. Zomato plans to expand these suggestions to other dishes and categories. For instance, if a user adds a dessert to their cart, the app might suggest lower-calorie options.
"We just launched a new feature on Zomato¡ªgently helping our customers to make healthier choices, just in case you are subconsciously ordering something you may later regret," Goyal explained. "To begin with, we have started suggesting roti as an alternative to naan."
He added, "We are seeing a 7% attachment rate for these suggestions and have received overwhelmingly positive feedback. We plan to scale this to other dishes and categories soon. For example, if you crave a dessert, we might show you lower-calorie options when you add it to your cart."
One user asked, "Can you mark items made in less oil or gluten free so it's easier to choose."
Zomato CEO replied, "Yessir ¨C will do!"
Another user asked, "Can I opt out of this when I am on a cheat day?"
Goyal, "Based on the feedback, we will make all of these nudges an opt in feature."
In a similar vein, Zomato-owned Blinkit is also finding new ways to engage customers. Recently, Blinkit CEO Albinder Dhindsa announced a new initiative: giving out free coriander with orders that meet a certain threshold of vegetables. This idea was inspired by a social media post where a user mentioned his mother was shocked at having to pay for 'dhaniya' (coriander).

In response, Dhindsa revealed that the quick-commerce platform will start offering 'free dhaniya' and asked users to thank 'Ankit¡¯s mom' for the suggestion. He also promised further refinements to the feature, stating, "It¡¯s live! Everyone please thank Ankit¡¯s mom. We will polish the feature in the next couple of weeks."
