One such story is that of Jayaram Banan, the man who changed the way we eat dosas. Proud owner of Sagar Ratna, a popular food chain spanning across Delhi-NCR and North India, which is valued at Rs 300 crore.
Jayaram's story traces back to his humble upbringing in Udupi, Karnataka, within a modest family. At just 13 years old, he made a courageous decision to venture out on his own, armed with only a small sum borrowed from his father's wallet following an unsuccessful school exam. His destination: Mumbai, a city that promises unknown challenges and opportunities.
In 1967, he landed a job washing utensils at a restaurant, earning a modest salary of Rs 18 per month. This humble beginning would later serve as the cornerstone for his future endeavors.
It was in 1974, that Jayaram went to Delhi to manage a canteen. This kickstarted his entrepreneurial journey and ultimately in 1986, he opened his own restaurant called ¡®Sagar¡¯.?
Despite starting from humble origins, Sagar's mouthwatering South Indian cuisine swiftly gained acclaim, drawing in a dedicated customer base and setting the stage for growth. This marked the birth of "Sagar-Ratna," with a thriving location in Lodhi Market, Delhi, which cemented Banan's position in the culinary realm.
Even though Sagar Ratna has premium prices, its commitment to quality and delicious flavors attract a steady stream of loyal customers which only fuelled Banan's ambitions.??He went on to open international outlets of his restaurant in Canada, Singapore, and Bangkok. Its remarkable annual turnover now exceeds Rs 300 crore.
Alongside Sagar Ratna, Banan expanded his horizons by establishing the Swagat restaurant chain in 2001, broadening his culinary empire.
