Barely a week after the French President Emmanuel Macron visited our country as the chief guest at Republic Day, France and India have revealed a big announcement.
Indian tourists visiting the iconic Eiffel Tower in France¡¯s capital city of Paris can now purchase tickets by paying through UPI. While the Eiffel Tower is the first place in France to offer UPI payments, this service is expected to soon be extended to other merchants in the tourism and retail space.
While its a no-brainer that this big move will give a global touch to India¡¯s very own UPI, which in itself has been a digital payment revolution ever since it was launched in the demonetization hit year of 2016, do you know that many other countries have already adopted UPI?

Coming back to the recent big announcement of UPI introduction in the iconic Eiffel Tower, here¡¯s how you can book tickets through UPI.?
The process is simple. To book tickets, Indian tourists can use their UPI apps to scan the QR code generated on the merchant¡¯s website and initiate a payment. "While the Eiffel Tower is the first merchant to offer UPI payments in France, this service will soon be extended to other merchants in the tourism and retail space. This will make it significantly easier for touring Indians to remotely book hotels, museum visits, etc. for their stay in France," NPCI International said in a release this month.
"This announcement is of particular significance considering that Indian tourists rank as the second largest group of international visitors to the Eiffel Tower," it added.
For the unversed, the NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) owns and operates UPI. The organization prescribes rules, regulations, guidelines, and the respective roles, responsibilities and liabilities with respect to UPI.?
About three years ago in July 2021,?Bhutan had become the first country to adopt UPI?standards?for its QR deployment, and also the first country in India's? immediate neighbourhood to accept mobile-based payments through the BHIM App.?
