Jaguar has announced a new version of its first ever EV offering - the I-Pace electric SUV. The new version has been priced lower than the original variant and is meant to appeal to a larger consumer base, at the expense of power.
Called I-Pace EV320, the new EV model has the same electric drivetrain as the original I-Pace EV400, with the same 90kWh battery to power it. The only difference lies in the recalibrated electric motors that now deliver 235kW or 320 hp of power.
The new power output still aims to appeal to those seeking a powerful performance. Jaguar, hence claims an acceleration of 0 to 100 kmph in 6.4 seconds. This is thanks to a considerable torque of 500 Nm on the electric SUV.
Interestingly, the new I-Pace model claims a range similar to that of its predecessor. Jaguar promises the electric SUV to go up to 470 km (WLTP) on a single charge.
The hefty price cut
In all aspects, the reduction in performance numbers on the new I-Pace is negligible, especially till the time one is not testing them out on a track. In contrast, the price cut that Jaguar has offered on the new model is quite appealing.
The new I-Pace EV320 starts retailing at a price of €65,990 (Rs 57.9 lakh) including VAT. The price decrease is steep, considering the price of the original model is kept at €81,855 (Rs 71.9 lakh). The prices listed are for the Jaguar I-Pace models available in Europe.
Jaguar, however, has confirmed that the new and affordable version of the I-Pace will be a limited edition model. Though the exact number of units has not been confirmed, the company does specify it to be a ¡°limited volume¡± make.
An appealing offer
With the I-Pace, Jaguar has been competing in an increasingly competitive segment of the electric vehicle market around the globe. The likes of Tesla Model X are already in contest at a similar price point. Several others, like Rivian and Lucid, are set to reveal their offerings in the segment too.
So it only makes sense for Jaguar to try and appeal to a larger consumer base through a reduced price. While the new price tag makes the I-Pace more affordable, it might deter buyers from going for the top, pricier model. We can guess that to be the reason why Jaguar will be producing the I-PACE EV320 in limited numbers.
