Emergency plot summary
The film follows Indira Gandhi's rise in Indian politics after her father - Jawaharlal Nehru's - death, leading to her becoming the country's first female Prime Minister.
It explores key events like the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, which boosted her popularity, and the challenges she faced, including a court ruling questioning her leadership.
As opposition grew, she declared a nationwide emergency, enforcing controversial policies such as forced sterilisation and slum demolitions led by her son, Sanjay Gandhi.
The story also covers Sanjay's tragic death, rising separatist movements, and ultimately, Gandhi's assassination in 1984 after Operation Blue Star.
Emergency review
The Indian Express described it as a "confused" biopic with weak craftsmanship.
NDTV labelled the film a "monumental muddle," criticising its superficial portrayal of historical events.
On the other hand, Mid-Day offered a more favourable view, calling it a "pretty solid biopic" that combines historical events with human empathy.

Kangana Ranaut stars as Indira Gandhi, alongside Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and the late Satish Kaushik.
The screenplay and dialogues are written by Ritesh Shah, while Ranaut, Renu Pitti, and Umesh Kr Bansal have produced the film under Manikarnika Films.
