My first memory of watching Kamal Haasan was in the film Chachi 420. I was blown away by his performance, and Tabu was equally impressive. His transformation into Chachi was completely convincing. Avvai Shanmughi's Bollywood remake, Chachi 420 released in 1997.

Vikram, starring our legendary Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, and Fahadh Faasil, has recently made a lot of headlines. The latest blockbuster, Vikram of Tamil megastar Kamal Haasan, has established a strong box office record in Tamil Nadu. On June 3, 2022, the film was released in cinemas. In its third week, Vikram has outperformed the profitability of Baahubali: The Conclusion in Tamil Nadu.

The plot revolves around a man named Velu Nayakan, who witnesses an unfortunate event in which his father is brutally murdered. He then seeks vengeance and murders a corrupt police officer before fleeing Bombay to become a gangster.

Nayakan was well-received by critics. The film is broadly considered to be the best Tamil film ever made. Haasan won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Nayakan. Not only that, but the film also received a National Award for Best Cinematography.

2. Mahanadhi

The plot revolves around an upright man named Krishnaswamy. He is duped into a chit-fund scheme, for which he faces jail time. His family is falling to pieces as he faces indescribable trials in prison.

This film is based on a unique idea that has some resemblance to reality. Haasan got the idea for Mahanadhi after discovering his household strategies to kidnap his daughters for a ransom.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Kamal Haasan confirmed that the Mahanadi story was inspired by his household helpers, who conspired to kidnap his daughter for ransom. It was pure luck that he discovered their plan before they could carry it out. He felt that there was rage and a desire to kill them all for jeopardising his daughter's safety. On the job, he was putting off writing a new script. Later, when he sat down to write, the script may have written itself aided by fear, wariness, and anxiety.

3. Anbe Sivam

Anbe Sivam

The plot of the film begins when Nalla and Aras are stranded at the Chennai airport. Aras makes an effort to avoid the man with the abnormalities. They form an unlikely friendship while forced to accompany each other to Chennai.

Anbe Sivam premiered at the 2003 International Film Festival of India and went on to win numerous awards. These included a Special Jury Award and nominations for Best Film and Best Actor at the 51st Filmfare Awards South.

The plot revolves around an unemployed man who, like everyone else, wishes to make a successful life for himself. One evening, he discovers a rich man drunk and unconscious in the sewer. The mystery deepens when he imprisons him and takes his identity to replicate his way of life.

Pushpak is a film that is way ahead of its time. The film is silent, with no dialogue and no songs. The film received National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment in 1988.

5. Thevar Magan

The plot revolves around a young man named Saktivelu, who returns to India from London. He aspires to open his restaurant chain in Chennai. However, his father wishes for him to remain to assist the villager.

Bharathan directing the film and the superhit duo Kamal Sivaji sharing screen space. Along with Nasser as the villain, Revathi and Gautami as the heroines, and all the supporting cast have all performed admirably. There are no words to describe how incredible the film Thevar Magan is.

Sadly, the film is not available online, but you can rent a DVD.

6. Sadma

Sadma, starring Sridevi and Kamal Haasan, is a must-see film. In a brothel, Somu, played by Haasan, meets Nehalata, played by Sridevi. That's when he realises she has amnesia, which causes her to deteriorate to a childlike state. He wishes to safeguard her by taking her to his home in Ooty.

The film is an adaptation of Balu Mahendra's own Tamil film Moondram Pirai from 1982. This film also features one of my all-time favourite songs "Ae Zindagi Gale Laga Le" by Suresh Wadkar.

7. Sagara Sangamam

The plot revolves around Balakrishna, a trained Kuchipudi dancer. Finally, after much effort, he is given the chance to participate in a classical dance fest. Unfortunately, his mother dies two days before his performance at the classical dance festival. That leaves him heartbroken.

Kamal Haasan and Jaya Prada deliver unforgettable performances, with music director Ilaiyaraaja providing soulful background music. K. Viswanath directorial takes you on an emotional journey.

8. Virumaandi

Angela Kathamuthu, a civil rights activist and journalist, enters Madras Central Prison to meet prisoners sentenced to life and facing the death penalty. She is working on her PhD thesis in law and is staunchly opposed to the death penalty.

She met Virumandi and Kothala while doing research for her thesis. During her conversation with them, she begins to realize Virumandi is being prosecuted for a crime he did not commit.

9. Hey Ram

Hey Ram

The plot is based on a fantastical Indian drama about Saketh Ram, played by Kamal Haasan a disillusioned man who attempts to assassinate Mohandas Gandhi played by Naseeruddin Shah.

Saketh becomes a Hindu extremist after communal violence murders his wife, Aparna played by Rani Mukharjee. In the film, the riots are instigated by Muslims, and they are to blame for his wife's death. His character begins to blame Gandhi for everything, including his forgiving approach to religious differences. Saketh is filled with hatred and religious fanaticism since all he desires is revenge.

10. Ek Duuje Ke Liye

Ek Duuje Ke Liye

Vasu and Sapna's love story is central to the film. The couple is madly in love, but their parents are opposed to their marriage due to the different cultures in their families. Eventually, the lovers are also separated, which allows for plenty of miscommunication and leads to the couple never reuniting.

The movie is a film adaptation of the director's own Telugu film Maro Charitra, which featured Kamal Haasan and Saritha. With a profit of Rs.100 million, this film was dubbed a "blockbuster" hit at the box office.
