Paatal Lok Season 2: The first season of the popular web series Paatal Lok starring Jaideep Ahlawat, was controversial because of its daring depiction of social themes. Many online users demanded that the show be banned because they thought it was harsh in certain instances. Paatal Lok Season 1 controversies
Gorkha community¡¯s claims
Members of the Gorkha community who objected to the series' use of a misogynistic insult in one of the episodes sent one of the first petitions against it. In a letter to Prakash Javadekar, the minister of information and broadcasting, Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba demanded action against the show.
A part of the letter read, ¡°Hence the derogatory and offensive label made in the particular scene of the series has not only hurt the sentiments of the community but has also set an example of racist stereotyping of the people from the community especially at this time where the people from the northeast region have already endured racial assaults owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.¡±
Portrayal of the Sikh community
The president of the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee and a former Akali Dal MLA, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, demanded that the show be banned for defaming Sikhs. The series should be banned for defaming "religious harmony," he said. He made reference to a series rape scene and tweeted ¡°Sikhs are Saviours of women. The whole world recognises Sikhs for their Sewa and Humanity but shame on @AnushkaSharma @PrimeVideoIN for showing Sikhs as Rapists¡±
Beef lynching and Hinduphobia
Controversy and charges of fostering communal discord were raised by a scene showing a Muslim man being lynched for consuming beef. The show's purportedly unfavorable depiction of some Hindu deities and customs alarmed some viewers and organisations too.
Paatal Lok Season 2 will be released on Prime Video on 17th January 2025.
