Thousands gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru¡¯s maiden IPL title near the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. However, the celebration turned tragic when a stampede broke out near the venue. As per reports of TOI, at least eight people are feared dead, and over 25 have been injured in the incident. The situation quickly spiralled out of control, raising concerns about crowd management and the decision-making behind holding the parade.
Overcrowding and poor planning cited as key triggers
According to early assessments, overcrowding and lack of proper crowd control are suspected to have caused the stampede. A massive number of RCB fans had gathered near Vidhana Soudha and Chinnaswamy Stadium, waving flags and celebrating the IPL 2025 victory. However, without adequate safety arrangements, panic spread, leading to chaos.
Government faces criticism over safety lapses
Karnataka BJP President B Y Vijayendra strongly criticised the state government, stating, ¡°The state government should take full responsibility for this tragedy. When the whole country and Karnataka were celebrating RCB's victory, the state government's haste to hold a victory rally without any prior preparations led to this tragedy.¡± He added that the ruling administration was more focused on publicity than making arrangements to ensure safety.

Deputy CM confirms program was stopped due to uncontrollable crowd
Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, responding to the incident, said, ¡°The crowd was uncontrollable. Police was finding it difficult, so we had to stop the program.¡± His statement confirmed that authorities were unable to manage the turnout, which overwhelmed security forces and led to the cancellation of the scheduled felicitation events.
Celebration turns into tragedy
The stampede has overshadowed what was meant to be a celebratory moment for the city and its cricket fans. Royal Challengers Bengaluru had recently clinched their first-ever IPL trophy under the captaincy of Rajat Patidar, defeating Punjab Kings. The planned open-top bus parade was already scrapped earlier in the day due to security concerns. The revised celebration, meant to take place between Vidhana Soudha and the stadium, failed to avert danger.
