The Romantics: Yash Chopra's Documentary Maker Reacts To Actors' Repulsion For Word 'Bollywood'

The docu-series "The Romantics" has already gained a strong following. Fans are eagerly awaiting everything, from the final interview with the late Rishi Kapoor to Inside biography of Yash Chopra.

The aversion of Hindi film actors to the term "Bollywood" was one aspect of the teaser for the docuseries "The Romantics" that stuck with viewers.

Reacting to the intriguing trailer a fan wrote, ¡°A well-deserved tribute to Yashji and his son Adi for their contribution to Hindi cinema and for adding so much love, color, song, dance, romance and fantasy into the lives of every Indian. We don't realise how much the cinema we watch affects the way we think, the way we celebrate, the way we dance, the way we dress and eventually what we become.¡±

The series' creator and director, Smriti Mundhra, was taken aback by the actors' apparent discontent.

She said: "I was surprised to learn how unanimously people in the industry hate the term Bollywood. But in hindsight, it makes perfect sense. Who would want to be defined in the context of a totally different entity, especially with a term that feels reductive and derivative?"

Salim Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Ranveer Singh, Rani Mukerji, Hrithik Roshan, and Anushka Sharma are among the actors who are featured in the teaser speaking out against the use of the name "Bollywood" since they believe it excludes other film industries.

She added: "The Hindi film industry, and indeed all the regional industries that make up Indian cinema, are juggernauts unto their own. It's just too bad that the word 'Bollywood' is so catchy!"

The documentary series will include 35 prominent film industry figures who have intimately collaborated with YRF over the course of its 50-year history as a tribute to Yash Chopra's legacy, YRF, and its cultural impact on India over the past 50 years.

For the uninitiated, Rishi Kapoor worked closely with Yash Chopra and then Aditya Chopra on such cult classics as Kabhi Kabhie, Chandni, Jab Tak Hai Jaan (in which he appeared alongside his wife Neetu Kapoor), Fanaa, Hum Tum, etc.

Fans can see Rishi Kapoor discuss his close friendship with Yash Chopra and what made them one of the most adored director-actor teams in Hindi film, particularly the romantic classics, in The Romantics.

The docu-series¡¯ creator shared, ¡°Rishi Kapoor was not only an iconic actor, he carried with him an encyclopedic knowledge of the Hindi film industry. On the day of our interview, which would be his last, he was characteristically charming, erudite, and eager to reminisce. His death represents the loss of a significant piece of cinema history, and I¡¯ll forever be grateful for the insights, anecdotes and perspective he shared.¡±

He passed unexpectedly from dengue fever during the 2012 filming of "Jab Tak Hai Jaan." He is regarded as one of the best directors in Bollywood history.The project will begin streaming on Netflix on February 14th for those who are unfamiliar.
