From Sardar Udham To Sherni, The Most Impactful Bollywood Movies We Watched In 2021

It has been a great year for Bollywood. In the midst of the second wave of coronavirus pandemic, theatres had shut and then they have reopened again. From much-awaited films like Sooryavanshi finally hitting the screens to movies like Sardar Udham creating an uproar via social media, here are some of the most impactful Bollywood movies that we watched in 2021.

1. Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi

Bauji is no more and his entire family has come under one roof for 13 days after a very long time. What happens amid to the family suffering from grief? There's conflict, politics, confrontations and much more as they discover themselves and their truth.

The film not only talks about death but also depicts how it is the beginning of something new With a stellar cast that includes Naseeruddin Shah, Vinay Pathak, Vikrant Massey, Konkona Sen Sharma, Vineet Kumar, Manoj Pahwa, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Supriya Pathak, Deepika Amin and Ninad Kamat, the film is a moving tale of life and loss.

2. The White Tiger

The film was nominated at the 93rd Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay. Adarsh Gaurav who starred alongside Rajkumar Rao and Priyanka Chopra in the film also bagged a BAFTA nomination under the category of best actor. An adaptation of Aravind Adiga's 2008 novel of the same name, The White Tiger is a brilliant film that has a great suspenseful ending.

3. Pagglait

A lot of comparisons were drawn between Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi and Paggalit as both the films are based on similar themes, yet they are both brilliant in their own ways. Starring Sanya Malhotra, Ashutosh Rana, Shruti Sharma, Raghubir Yadav and Rajesh Tailang, the film follows the story of a young widow who tries to deal with the complex emotions of life and death, and her family.

4. Sherni

One of the 14 films that were in a race to represent India at the Oscars, Sherni is not only a stark reminder of the mysterious case of Avni, but also shows how misogyny and patriarchy afflict our society today.

5. Shershaah

From Captain Batra's family to Shah Rukh Khan, the film left everyone impressed. Based on the life of Captain Vikram Batra (PVC), Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani's Shershaah won the hearts of the audiences and became Sidharth Malhotra's highest rated movie on IMDb.

6. Sardar Udham

The uproar that the film created after the Indian jury rejected the film as India's official Oscar entry is proof enough of how much the audiences loved the biopic of the unsung freedom fighter. Vicky Kaushal's performance is marvellous in the film.

7. Aadhaar

Directed by Suman Ghosh and starring Vineet Kumar Singh, Saurabh Shukla, Raghubir Yadav, Ishtiyak Khan, Sanjay Mishra and Prithvi Hatte is about a villager who is the first one to enroll for Aadhaar but because of a premonition about his wife, he has to get his number changed. The film takes on India's class divide and criticizes the system in the most hilarious way. If you loved Peepli Live, this one is a must-watch for you.

8. Haseen Dillruba

Starring Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey, the film will keep you on the edge of the seat throughout. We bet you won't be able to guess the murder mystery's suspense until the very end.

9. Ajeeb Daastaans

Consisting of four short segments, Ajeeb Daastaans explores themes like dysfunctional love, prejudice, loneliness and revenge. While there are two extremely great stories in this, there are other two which most people weren't impressed with.

10. Rashmi Rocket

In Taapsee Pannu-starrer Rashmi Rocket, Rashmi is a National-level player who is forced to take a gender test because people have tagged her as "mardana" and someone who is "not conventionally feminine". In this humiliating archaic practice of gender test, she is told, "aap apne sare kapde utar lijiye". What follows is a ban and then a case. In the midst of mudslinging, she is left heartbroken. The film will remind you of Dutee Chand's real-life story.

11. Nail Polish

Nail Polish is an intriguing crime-legal thriller that explores the uncertainty of human mind. Starring Arjun Rampal, Manav Kaul, Anand Tiwari and Rajit Kapur, the film manages to sustain its twists and turns.
