Dhirubhai Ambani, one of India¡¯s most successful and respected business tycoons, was born on this day in 1932. The legendary businessman has inspired many over the years with his inspiring life journey. Dhirubhai Ambani, who was the son of a school teacher, faced many challenges during his early life but did not let them break him. He eventually founded Reliance Industries in 1958 and the rest is history. He remained a force to reckon with till his death in 2002.
Mani Ratnam¡¯s Guru was rumoured to Dhirubhai¡¯s biopic
Dhirubhai Ambani was one of India¡¯s most popular industrialists. In 2006, nearly two decades ago , filmmaker Mani Ratnam tried to capture the essence of his life through Guru. The film featured Abhishek Bachchan in the titular role and was rumoured to be a biopic of Dhirubhai Ambani. The director, however, maintained that it was a work of fiction merely inspired by ¡°stories both past and present¡±.
Despite this, the similarities between Guru and Dhirubhai Ambani¡¯s life were hard to miss. The film¡¯s protagonist, much like the business tycoon, had his roots in Gujarat and was born to a teacher. In Guru, Abhishek¡¯s character went aboard to work for a gas company and returned to India to import polyester. These events were similar to what happened in Dhirubhai Ambani¡¯s life.
Given these facts, Guru is perceived to be a tribute to Dhirubhai Ambani¡¯s life and struggles.
About Guru
Guru, directed and co-written by Mani Ratnam, was one of the biggest hits of 2007. It centered on a schoolmaster¡¯s son as he overcomes the odds to become a successful industrialist. It featured Abhishek Bachchan as the titular character and proved to be a game-changer for him. The cast included Aishwarya Rai, R Madhavan, Vidya Balan, and Mithun Chakraborty. Mallika Sherawat made a special appearance in the film. AR Rahman served as Guru's music director.
