Meet K¨¢roly Tak¨¢cs, The Legendary Disabled Olympic Shooter Whose Story Inspired Balki's Ghoomer
Wondering who inspired R Balki's Ghoomer? This Abhishek-Saiyami starrer is loosely based on the life story of shooter K¨¢roly Tak¨¢cs.
Abhishek Bachchan and Saiyami Kher are all set to feature in R Balki¡¯s Ghoomer. This sports drama features Abhishek in the role of a cricket coach and Saiyami as a disabled player. The film is releasing in theatres on 18th August. Unknown to many, Ghoomer is loosely inspired by the life story of K¨¢roly Tak¨¢cs, an Olympic-winning athlete.
What¡¯s Ghoomer's storyline?
The film follows the journey of Anina, a young batter whose life takes a dramatic turn after she loses one of her hands in a tragic accident. She then decides to abandon cricket until a determined, unsuccessful cricketer reignites her hope. He introduces her to innovative training techniques and develops a unique bowling style.
Who was K¨¢roly Tak¨¢cs?
Hailing from Budapest, K¨¢roly Tak¨¢cs enlisted in the Hungarian Army during his youth. His proficiency in pistol shooting rapidly elevated him to the ranks of a world-renowned marksman by 1936. In 1938, Tak¨¢cs was engrossed in his military training when a malfunctioning grenade explosion inflicted a severe injury upon him.
The incident resulted in the loss of control over his dominant right hand, yet his resolute spirit propelled him to persevere in his shooting pursuit. He dedicated himself to mastering left-handed shooting. The narrative of Abhishek Bachchan's film "Ghoomer" closely mirrors his remarkable journey.
Talking about the sportsman spirit, Saiyami revealed she took inspiration from cricketer Yuvraj Singh.
She said as per Filmfare, ¡°For me, Ghoomer is a film about triumph. And Yuv'is career has been an inspiring triumph. A sportsperson does not just prepare physically but also mentally. I feel Yuvraj¡¯s story has been a story that has inspired me and many like me.¡±

¡°To be at the peak of his career and then go through cancer and come back from there speaks volumes about his mental tenacity. Yuvi has known my love for cricket, I can¡¯t wait for him to see it." Ghoomer also stars Shabana Azmi, Angad Bedi, Nasir Khan and Ivanka Das.
Abhishek¡¯s father and megastar Amitabh Bachchan revealed he cried after watching Ghoomer.
He wrote in his blog, ¡°So yes I saw Ghoomer back to back twice .. Sunday afternoon .. and then at night again .. and the verdict is beyond mention .. simply incredible.. eyes have been in the aqua flow from the very first frame .. and when the progeny is involved, they flow copiously ..¡±
¡°and each reaction has some wonder in their thoughts and words and deeds .. each notices something that is so endearing and appealing."
