'Sikh Community Went Through Many Difficulties': Aamir Khan On Why 'Laal Singh Chaddha' Is A Sikh
The actor said that he felt the script was "natural and organic" and that "none of them questioned why he is a Sikh".
As the release date approaches, Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor are stepping up promotions for their upcoming movie Laal Singh Chaddha. The film, a Hindi remake of the Tom Hanks-starring Hollywood classic Forrest Gump, took 12 years to complete.
People who have seen the award-winning picture 'Forrest Gump' are eagerly waiting to see what Aamir Khan and his team have done to adapt the film to match the tastes of the Indian diaspora.
The movie stars Aamir Khan as the title character and will explore the country's sociopolitical developments.
The veteran actor discussed the idea of remaking Tom Hanks' role as a Sikh in an interview with journalist Baradwaj Rangan. Laal Singh Chaddha's script was written with the character of a Sikh in mind by Atul Kulkarni.
The actor said that he felt the script was "natural and organic" and that "none of them questioned why he is a Sikh" when he read it. The actor did, however, clarify that he could have represented anyone.
Explaining the need to recreate Hanks' character as a Sikh in 'Laal Singh Chaddha', Aamir said,
''But I think Atul did that because, in our timeline of recent socio-political history, 1983¨C84 was a very key time, a very difficult time, and the Sikh community went through a lot of difficulties at that time."
Additionally, he gave Atul Kulkarni credit for creating the Sikh character as a way to involve the audience in character.
Aamir Khan admitted on Tuesday that he has been having trouble sleeping in anticipation of the premiere of his highly anticipated movie "Laal Singh Chaddha."
The film, an official Hindi remake of the Tom Hanks-led 1994 Hollywood classic "Forrest Gump," is scheduled to be released theatrically worldwide on Thursday.
Khan, whose last big screen outing "Thugs of Hindostan" had a dull run at the box office in 2018, said his brain is in "overdrive" mode.
"I¡¯m really nervous about the release. I have not slept for 48 hours¡ My brain is in overdrive. I play chess online and read books to keep myself busy. I guess I can only sleep after 11th August. I believe both Advait Chandan (director) and I will sleep like a log post the film's release," the 57-year-old actor said at an event in Delhi.
Written by Atul Kulkarni, "Laal Singh Chaddha" also features Kareena Kapoor Khan, Naga Chaitanya, and Mona Singh in pivotal roles.
