Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit Claims India's Official Entry 'Chhello Show' For Oscars 2023 Is Copied
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit has claimed that India's official entry 'Chhello Show' for the 2023 Academy Awards is copied.
'Chhello Show', which is a coming-of-age Gujarati drama showcasing a young boy's love for cinema in a village in Saurashtra, has become India's official entry for Oscars 2023, as announced by the Film Federation of India (FFI).
The English title of Chhello Show is "Last Film Show", which has been directed by Pan Nalin. It is slated to be released in theatres across the country on October 14.
According to reports published by the Free Press Journal, FFI president TP Aggarwal had earlier said that "Chhello Show" was unanimously selected for the 95th Academy Awards as India's official entry over ace director SS Rajamouli's hit film 'RRR,' Ayan Mukerji's film 'Brahmastra: Part One Shiva' led by Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt, Vivek Agnihotri's hit film 'The Kashmir Files' and R Madhavan's directorial debut 'Rocketry: The Nambi Effect.'
As the news of the Gujarati film being preferred over some of the blockbuster films for the Oscars entry surfaced on social media, filmmaker Ashoke Pandit took to his Instagram handle and posted the poster claiming that the film will get rejected as it's a copy.
The filmmaker has claimed that India has lost another opportunity by not choosing an original film as the official entry for Oscars 2023.
¡°The jury of #FFI falters once again. Selects the film #ChhelloShow as India¡¯s Oscar entry, which is a copy of #CinemaParadiso. The basic rule of originality has been overlooked and the film will be rejected only because it¡¯s a copy. Another opportunity lost,¡± Ashoke Pandit wrote on his official Instagram account.
A few people have reacted to Ashoke Pandit's claims on social media.
One user wrote, "What a shame."
While another said, "Remake movie time waste to send Oscar."
According to PTI, 'Chhello Show had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2021. It has also won multiple awards including the Golden Spike at the 66th Valladolid Film Festival in Spain during its festival run.
Here's the official trailer of 'Chhello Show':
