'Can't Even Kiss Her A Farewell', Toronto Filmmaker Booked For Kaali Poster On Grandma's Death
Toronto-based filmmaker Leena Manimekalai's grandmother has passed away.
Madurai-born filmmaker, Leena Manimekalai, who is based in Toronto courted bitter controversy after she released the poster of her upcoming documentary film Kaali.
The poster showed a woman dressed as the Hindu goddess smoking a cigarette that didn't go down well with the masses. Many people raised an objection to the depiction other than Hindu priests and political leaders.
Several FIRs had been filed against Leena Manimekalai across India. Reports suggests that Leena Manimekalai's grandmother recently passed away. On Friday, Leena Manimekalai took to Facebook to share a post revealing that she could not kiss her grandma goodbye because of the several FIRs filed against her in the country.
Calling her grandmother Rajeswari "a binding force for the family" Manimekalai said in her Facebook post that said, "I don't understand why I am alive when I can't even kiss her a farewell.¡±
"I am stuck in Toronto because I am a ¡°criminal¡± according to the Indian Government that has booked me in nine FIRs and issued a ¡°look out circular¡± to arrest me in the airport itself - all for a film poster. Three days ago, Avva has told my amma that, I would win all the cases.
She whispered ¡°love you, muah¡± in my last video call with her. Maybe I am alive to live her wish. I am Kali. My avva is Kali¡¯s mother. We can be defeated but not be destroyed," the filmmaker wrote in her FB post explaining why she could not bid a final adieu to her grandmother.
Leena Manimekalai's documentary film Kaali's poster and it's promo video showing the Hindu goddess smoking triggered uproar on social media for hurting religious sentiments.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and several Hindu priests have strongly objected to Leena's film poster and has sought action against the filmmaker.
The poster of Kaali shared by Leena Manimekalai on the micro-blogging site was later removed by Twitter. After receiving flak over the controversial poster, the filmmaker took to Twitter to defend herself, and even urged netizens to choose "love over hate."
