Chunky Panday was once hailed as 'Shah Rukh Khan of Bangladesh', was a big superstar there
Amid Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and escape from Bangladesh, here's Chunky Panday's journey from Bollywood to becoming a superstar in Bangladesh, where he was hailed as the 'Shah Rukh Khan of Bangladesh'.
While Indians called him Shah Rukh Khan of Bangladesh, people in our neighbouring country referred to SRK as Chunky Panday of Bollywood. Ananya Panday's father who is fondly called Akhri Pasta, a character from his film Housefull, was once a big rage in Bangladesh. There was a point when he shifted base to the country as he didn't get work in Bollywood.

Chunky Panday said that he was left with no work for six months despite giving a superhit film Aankhen in 1993. When he got the offer to do a film in Bangladesh, he didn't say no. The film turned out to be the biggest blockbuster in the country and then he never looked back. Talking about this phase when Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan were rising to popularity in Bollywood, Chunky told IANS in 2018, "The money was good and I was desperately in need of money at that time, so I took the offer. It was a sort of stock gamble for me. But my first film became such a huge hit that I never looked back and worked there for five years until I got married in 1998."

After he married Bhavna Panday, he took her to Bangladesh for honeymoon. It was she who suggested that while he should remember that people in the country love him immensely, at the same time, he should never forget his roots. He said, "When I came back, I learnt the value of success and learnt to cherish it. I had a game plan in mind, which was not there in the beginning. Maybe I was too young. There is a tendency to blame people, but you shouldn¡¯t. You are the creator of your success and failure."
Hence, a year later, he decided to go back to his home country and try his luck once again. However, by then, Bollywood had forgotten him. Chunky however didn't give up. He went to people from office to office asking for work, which worked in his favour. He did some of the memorable roles after that.
While Chunky was a big star in Bangladesh, Indian films however found it tough to release films in the country, which apparently didn't want Hindi films to ruin the business of their local films. Did you know Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan became the first Hindi film to be released in the country, which is now facing violent protests after its PM Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country, after 50 years?
