People continue to discuss about the film years after it was released, making it a cult classic. On November 5, 1991, the Santhana Bharathi-directed movie made its theatrical debut. The movie's original June 21, 2024, theatrical re-release date was postponed by the Madras High Court due to copyright concerns. But in September, the prohibition was removed.

All about the plot
Gunaa centers on Haasan's character, a recently freed psychiatric patient, who kidnaps Roshini, an heiress, in order to win her heart. He feels that he is destined to marry her since she is an embodiment of the goddess Abhirami. As per reports, Sab John, the co-writer was somewhat influenced by a mentally ill person he knew when he created the Gunaa narrative.

Kamal Haasan plays Gunaa, Rekha plays Rosy, and Roshini plays Rohini (Abhirami) in the movie Gunaa. S. P. Balasubrahmanyam portrays Ramaiah, and Janagaraj plays Chitappa. Pradeep Shakthi plays Ismail, Sharat Saxena plays Suresh Kumar, Girish Karnad plays Ganesh, and Ananthu is seen as Gunaa's cellmate.
For the unversed, it's interesting to note that Devil's Kitchen, the setting for the film, is now known as Guna Caves and became a well-known tourist destination. The similar area was explored in the 2024 Malayalam release Manjummel Boys.
