After Heeramandi actress Sharmin Segal said she tried to capture Meena Kumari*s sense of "nothingness" in her Heeramandi performance, she mentioned it took her 15每16 tries to finish watching Pakeezah for inspiration. Once again defending her acting, Sharmin emphasised that she was trying to bring a similar depth and subtlety to her role, which may have been misunderstood by some viewers. She reiterated that her portrayal of Alamzeb was meant to reflect a complex, nuanced character and not a lack of expression. Sharmin expressed that she hoped audiences would eventually understand and appreciate the layers of her performance.
Sharmin Segal's Heeramandi Acting Was Inspired By Meena Kumari?
In an interview with ETimes, Sharmin said she watched Meena Kumari*s Pakeezah (1972) to inspire her performance in Heeramandi. Sharmin, who has faced a lot of criticism for her acting in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's web series, said she was trying to evoke the same emotion as Meena Kumari*s tragic character, Alamzeb.
Sharmin told ETimes she prepared for her role by training in dance and diction and praised Bhansali*s direction. She found it difficult to get through Pakeezah because it was so different from anything she had seen before. She highlighted how Meena Kumari*s performance showed a sense of "nothingness."
Sharmin, who was criticised for her "expressionless" acting, discussed the negative feedback. She said people have many emotions, making characters like Alamzeb interesting. She*s grateful that people are noticing her and is happy for the opportunity. She believes being a creative person means accepting both praise and criticism.
Sharmin said it*s nice to hear praise from parents, but it*s even more meaningful to receive it from audiences worldwide. Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, released on Netflix in May, also stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Richa Chadha, and Fardeen Khan. But Sharmil has been receiving a lot of criticism for her acting skills.
