Who is Payal Kapadia?
Awards are nothing new for Payal Kapadia, a graduate of the esteemed Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). Her 2021 documentary, A Night of Knowing Nothing, won the Best Documentary Award at the 74th Cannes Film Festival. However, it was her recent film All We Imagine As Light that brought her widespread recognition online.
The Protest
Payal Kapadia first gained prominence for her protests against the appointment of actor-turned-politician Gajendra Chauhan as FTII chairman. She was among the students who boycotted classes and other academic activities for 139 days, launching one of the longest demonstrations in FTII¡¯s history.
Her short film, Afternoon Clouds, was selected for the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. During her time at FTII, she received encouragement from the administration, which recognized her growth as a dedicated artist.
