¡®It¡¯s A Must Watch¡¯, Priyanka Chopra Appreciates Pakistan¡¯s Official Oscar 2023 Entry Joyland

The awaited nominations of the 95th Academy Awards (Oscars 2023) are just a few days down from their announcement. The voting concluded on 17th January after 9,579 eligible voting members filled out their ballots for a global award that will be held on March 12 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

After hosting India¡¯s official Oscars entry Chhello Show in LA, Priyanka Chopra has now praised Pakistan¡¯s academy contender.

PC took to Twitter and Instagram and shared her words of appreciation for the film Joyland which is Pakistan¡¯s official entry to the Oscars. She wrote, ¡°#Joyland is truly a joy to watch. Bravo to the entire team for bringing this story to life. It's a must-watch.¡± The film¡¯s makers reacted to PC¡¯s appreciation and thanked her.

Written and directed by Saim Sadiq, Joyland follows the story of the youngest son from a traditional Pakistani family, who falls in love with Biba (Alina Khan), a transgender woman. She is the showrunner who gets the guy a job as a backup dancer in a Bollywood-style burlesque act. Joyland stars Ali Junejo, Rasti Farooq and Alina Khan and is executive produced by Nobel Prize-winner Malala Yousafzai.

Despite global recognition, Pakistan banned its own official Oscars entry, Joyland.

It was back in November last year that Joyland was banned in Pakistan. Pakistan¡¯s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting quoted back then, ¡°Written complaints were received that the film contains highly objectionable material which does not conform with the social values and moral standards of our society and is clearly repugnant to the norms of ¡®decency and morality¡¯ as laid down in Section 9 of the Motion Picture Ordinance, 1979.¡±

Although the ban was lifted later, Joyland came out as the first ever Pakistani film to be screened at Cannes Film Festival to have not been accepted by its own country. Following its Cannes debut, Joyland was screened at numerous festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival. It is also nominated for the best international film at the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards.

Producer David Dubinsky attended Priyanka¡¯s hosting event of Pan Nalin's Last Film Show and shared inside pictures from there.

He wrote alongside, "With Priyanka Chopra, actress, model, and producer at the movie screening and reception of Last Film Show, a coming of age drama of a boy from a remote village in India who discovers the joys of the movie theatre just as digital projection changes the game. It is India¡¯s submission to the Academy Awards and was just shortlisted in the Best International feature film category."
