Robbie Coltrane and Aishwarya Rai in Provoked
The Scottish actor worked with the Bollywood beauty in 2006 British film Provoked, a biographical movie based on the life of Kiranjit Ahluwalia, an Indian woman who fatally burned and murdered her own husband in 1989. In the film, Aishwarya plays lead role while Naveen Andrews, her co-star from Bride and Prejudice (2004), essays the role of her husband Deepak Ahluwalia. After enduring 10 years of domestic abuse and marital rape, she unintentionally sets her husband on fire.
She is then charged with murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
When she is the jail, she becomes friends with another inmate Veronica Scott played by Miranda Richardson, who in turn appeals to her brother Edward Foster (Robbie Coltrane) who is a highly respected Queen's Counsel to appeal for her. An NGO ends up fighting for her and she wins the battle for freedom leading to redefining the British legal definition of 'provocation' in cases when women are assaulted. The movie is based on the autobiographical book Circle of Light written by Kiranjit Ahluwalia.
