For the unversed, Maalal, produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is a romantic drama film written and directed by Mangesh Hadawale. A remake of the 2004 Tamil-Telugu bilingual film 7G Rainbow Colony by writer-director Selvaraghavan, this film presents a modern love story between Astha Tripathi and Shiva More. The roles are portrayed by newcomers Sharmin Segal Mehta and Meezaan Jafri. Set in a Mumbai chawl, the narrative explores their relationship despite coming from contrasting backgrounds. Richa Chadha meanwhile has said that it's the audience's right if they didn't like Sharmin Segal's acting as Alamzeb in Heeramandi. "I think truthfully, it is the audience's right. It's the audience's prerogative that you like the show, you dislike the show. You like a performance, you dislike a performance," she was quoted as saying by Pinkvilla.
She added, "But what happens today, I think in the era of social media, when people start trolling, making memes, doing all that, that's a bit hurtful, I think, for anyone. We must never be unkind because it can happen to you tomorrow. And everyone is a human being."
