One of the most sought-after actors of the Malayalam film industry, Fahadh Faasil has won over the audiences with films like Irul and Joji this year. His next title Malik has kept the fans waiting for a long time now. As the highly anticipated film is nearing its release, here is everything you need to know about Malik, the film that brings out the best of Fahadh Faasil.

It's Fahadh Faasil's most ambitious project.

It's a once-in-a-lifetime role. After all, who gets to play a character of different ages in the same film. "This film is something that we have never done before in terms of the narrative and our performances," Faasil had told Gulf News in an interview.

In another statement, he said, "The storyline of Malik is truly very special to me and we have put our heart and soul into making this film. I¡¯m sure our viewers will also feel that after watching the amazing trailer. I hope that viewers across the world share their love and appreciation for this film too."

The film brings back the blockbuster duo Mahesh Narayanan and Fahadh Faasil.

The director-actor duo has previously worked together in films like CU Soon, Take Off and Uyare. It is said that the idea of the film was discussed on the sets of Take Off. Since the film was big and ambitious, it took years for it to go on floors.

The political thriller is about Sulaimaan, a character whose four phases of life (from 20 years to 57 years) will be essayed by Fahadh Faasil.

The film chronicles the journey of Sulaiman Malik (essayed by Fahadh Faasil), a charismatic leader bestowed with unconditional love and loyalty from the people of his community who leads a revolution against authoritative forces that try to encroach on the lives of his people. Spanning different time periods, Malik is a compelling story of a past ridden with crime, death and pain that is recounted to Freddy, a juvenile criminal, who has been assigned to eliminate his estranged uncle Sulaiman, while behind bars.

The film is inspired by real-life incidents down the South. "At its core, Malik is a political thriller. The story is relevant because in Kerala, there has been an increase of land acquisition cases, especially in sensitive coastal areas," director Mahesh Narayanan told Etimes adding "This film revolves around a place where there was a resistance against this constant threat of displacement of a minority community and a person who was responsible for making his people rise up."

Fahadh Faasil's Sulaiman Malik is also inspired by a real-life person.

While the makers haven't revealed much, as per them, the film is based on "a real-life person who passed away in 1986". The film explores how things would have been if he was alive after the coastal regions were ravaged by Ockhi cyclone in 2018.

As per the director, the film is quite relevant at a time when the government is announcing schemes after schemes for the minority communities. "The movie also talks about how certain communities are strategically displaced from a place by forces such as politicians and corporates for their benefits, and highlights several issues that crop up from their rehabilitation to concrete buildings," he added.

The frenzy of the film is such that 1,500 people gathered to watch Faasil shoot for it.

"This film is also special because I get to work once again with this very versatile actor Fahadh. He has such a huge fan following that once when we were shooting a scene, almost 1500 people had gathered to watch him," the director said in a statement to News18.

The film boasts an impressive supporting cast

Apart from Faasil in the lead role, the film also stars Nimisha Sajayan as Malik's wife, Joju George ad Police officer, Vinay Forrt, Indrans, Jalaja and Dileesh Pothan in prominent roles.

"The film has a very unconventional and unique narrative that spans different time periods which was quite challenging for me to perform. I can¡¯t wait to see how fans react to this masterpiece that Mahesh Sir has beautifully helmed," said Nimisha Sajayan.

In the 1.23-minute-long trailer, Fahadh can be seen in the role of Sulaiman Malik, a messiah for the poor and needy. He stands up against the rich who use their power to acquire the land illegally.

The latest song from the film takes you through the romantic journey between the lead actors.

Sung by KS Chithra and Sooraj Santhosh, the song has been penned by Anwar Ali.

Malik is set to release on OTT.

Malik will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on July 15. The movie was earlier slated to release on the big screen on Eid. However, it couldn't happen because of the pandemic.
