Lady Gaga has courted many controversies throughout her celebrated career. From holding a concert with a Covid-19 diagnosis to wearing a dress made of raw meat at an award show, we are listing five instances when Gaga managed to outdo her OTT persona.
Hollywood pop icon Lady Gaga has had her fair share of controversies and scandals throughout her two-decade-long legendary career. From shocking COVID-19 claims to the titillating meat dress, calling the Mother Monster controversy's favourite child would not be an exaggeration. LG, who recently got engaged to beau Micheal Polansky, also makes headlines for her film choices. Before she woos you as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie ¨¤ Deux , slated to release this Thursday, let's take a look at five controversies courted by the singer-actor.
1. Gaga's COVID-19 concert
During a Q&A for an HBO concert special based on her 2022 Chromatic Ball tour, Lady Gaga was asked to reveal something that she had never spoken about before. While responding to it, the 'Mary Jane' crooner said that she¡¯d performed five shows while sick with COVID. Though Gaga, known for her work ethic, added that she had informed her team beforehand, it was not enough to save her from the brutal social media trolling that ensued following the revelation.
2. That Meat dress
Made of just raw meat and designed by Franc Fernande, Gaga's MTV VMAs dress ignited a tabloid frenzy back in 2010. Featuring a cowl neck and slashed to the thighs with an uneven ham, the dress came with matching beefy boots, a hat, and a meat clutch.
In response to Gaga's antics, a PETA blogger, slamming the singer, wrote, "Meat is the decomposing flesh of a tormented animal who didn't want to die, and after a few hours under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh it is and likely be crawling in maggots¡ªnot too attractive."
3. 'Judas' controversy
Lady Gaga stirred up a massive controversy with the lyrics and videos of her 2011 song Judas. The song outraged religious figures because of the alleged blasphemous tone of the lyrics where Gaga sings that she is 'in love with Judas.'
"This is a stunt... Lady Gaga tries to continue to shock Catholics and Christians in general: she dresses as a nun... she swallows the rosary. She has now morphed into a caricature of herself," a spokesman for the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights was quoted as saying by the Telegraph.
4. The Perez Hilton feud
Perez Hilton, at the pinnacle of his career as a pop music influencer, was a close pal of Gaga. But it didn't take friends to turn into foes after an interview around "Born This Way" that went awry. Gaga claimed Perez was salty. She refused to hang out with him because she doesn't want to be around 'fake' people. Hilton took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to hit back and write. "Fake on the @HowardStern this morning. Ha! Thanks for the laugh! Have you looked in the mirror lately??? Xoxo."
5. A blatant rip-off?
Many believe Gaga's song 'Born This Way' was a ripoff of Madonna's 'Express Yourself'. Madonna, too, shared similar thoughts. "The only time I ever criticized Lady Gaga was when I felt like she blatantly ripped off one of my songs," Madonna told Rolling Stone. Gaga, however, declined the claims, saying she plays a lot of instruments and writes her own songs.
