A special guest at the 2024 Oscars was Jharkhand farmer Ranjit, who is mentioned in the Priyanka Chopra-produced film To Kill A Tiger. It's significant to see a farmer at the Oscars, isn't it?
Nisha Pahuja shared photos with him on her Instagram and captioned her post ¡°This man. Without doubt, one of the proudest moments of my life. We tried to get Visas for him and his incredible daughter back in September for the US around the time of our theatrical launch. They were denied. It was a heartbreaking experience for all of us. Thanks to a group of wonderful supporters and champions the second time was a charm and they were able to attend the Oscars. Ranjit was sad to not win but we reassured him that we all won the moment he and Jaganti and their amazing daughter refused to capitulate to a false shame. Thank you Ranjit Bhai for showing the world how it¡¯s done. Your quiet resilience will now echo and inspire millions around the world. We are forever humbled and changed. @tokillatigerdoc #StandWithHer.¡±
As per IANS, "You can't kill a tiger by yourself," was the statement that was made to Ranjit when he decided to defend his daughter after she was gang-raped in 2017. Ranjit had been maintaining his rice fields in a remote area of Jharkhand up until that point.
Recounting this encounter toward the conclusion of Oscar-nominated documentary "To Kill A Tiger," directed by Indian Canadian filmmaker Nisha Pahuja, who was born in New Delhi, Ranjit adds with a steely determination, "But I replied, 'I'll show you how to kill a tiger all by yourself.' And so, I did."
Though the documentary won 19 prizes and missed the Oscar, it was picked up by Netflix and supported by well-known members of the Indian diaspora around the world, including Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Dev Patel, Mindy Kaling, poet Rupi Kaur, and Dr. Atul Gawande.
