Oscars 2025: Why Leonardo DiCaprio¡¯s Academy Awards journey feels like the Titanic
Oscars 2025: The Academy Awards and Leonardo DiCaprio pretty much have a 'hate hate' relationship. The actor, who is often lauded for his acting skills has so far got only one Oscar and that too was surrounded by controversies.

The 2025 Academy Awards are fast approaching, bringing back the perennial discussion about Leonardo DiCaprio¡¯s long and complicated journey with the Oscars. Despite delivering numerous legendary performances, the immensely talented actor has only won a single Academy Award, back in 2016. Many believe he was robbed multiple times, with one of the most debated cases being the Oscars, when Tommy Lee Jones won the Oscar The Fugitive. Fans argue that DiCaprio¡¯s brilliant, heartbreaking performance in What¡¯s Eating Gilbert Grape was far more deserving.
Leo¡¯s relationship with the Academy is pretty much like Titanic, a story full of misses, fans' anger, and beyond.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Oscars
Despite being consistently passed over by the Academy, DiCaprio was considered one of the greatest actors of his generation. Critics and admirers contended that despite his numerous Oscar-caliber performances, he was consistently ignored. DiCaprio finally won the Best Actor Oscar for The Revenant after years of rejection. DiCaprio discussed climate change in his 2016 acceptance speech. Some criticised him for being too political, while others applauded him for using his position to spread awareness.

Oscars So White
Although Leonardo DiCaprio was not directly involved in the #OscarsSoWhite matter, he was mentioned because of his 2016 Best Actor victory for The Revenant, which occurred at the height of the uproar. The #OscarsSoWhite protest gathered momentum in 2016 after all 20 acting nominations were for white people for the second year in a row. While actors of color like Will Smith (Concussion) and Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation) were passed over, DiCaprio was nominated for and won Best Actor for The Revenant (2015).
Despite ongoing discussions about superficial and structural challenges, studios and award organisations have recently made an attempt to be more inclusive.
Whether it was What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator, Blood Diamond, The Wolf of Wall Street, or other standout performances, Leonardo DiCaprio has faced multiple Oscar snubs that continue to haunt fans. Even in 2025, the heartbreak remains, Leo still has only one Oscar and it feels like that one sinking ship we all remember.
