Squid Game goes global! Netflix ropes in David Fincher to direct the English adaptation of South Korean survival show

Squid Game, Netflix's South Korean survival show, is going global! Critically acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher is reportedly looking forward to directing a version of the 2021 scripted series set in the US. The development comes just two months ahead of Squid Game 2's release, set to premiere on Netflix on December 26, 2024.

David Fincher to direct English adaptation of Squid Game: Report

As per a Deadline report, Netflix has roped in David Fincher to direct the US adaptation of its wildly popular show The Squid Game.

The details related to the upcoming show have been kept under wraps, but Dennis Kelly, renowned for penning the critically acclaimed thriller series Utopia (2013-2014), is reportedly on board as a screenwriter. Contrary to initial reports suggesting Netflix will release a film adaptation, sources told the publication Fincher's next will be an official adaptation of the Squid Game.

David's history with Netflix

David is one of the few people to have been associated with Netflix since its early years. He directed two episodes of of the historic political thriller show House of Cards back in 2018. Fincher's directing credits also include Mindhunter (2017), Love, Death & Robots (2014), Mank (2020), and The Killer (2023), all released on the streaming platform.

About Squid Game

Squid Game, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk for Netflix, starred Jung Ho-yeon, Lee Jung-jae, Anupam Tripathi, Heo Seong-tae, and Wi Ha-joon in pivotal roles. Released in 2021, it became a global phenomenon and one of the most-watched shows on the platform.

The series follows Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), a financially struggling divorced father who participates in a mysterious game with 455 other players for quick money unaware of its fatal circumstances. The game consists of six children's games but it's not that simple. In case of failing to survive, the participants will be met with deadly consequences.

Following its critical global success, the show has been renewed for two more seasons. The second season will premiere on December 26, while the third part will reportedly be released in 2026.
