We have often found our favorite men in shows we have always loved watching. Considering we invest a significant amount of time watching these shows, and they grow on us with every episode, it becomes difficult for us to detach ourselves from them.
We often end up thinking about them more often than we should.
But have you ever noticed the red flags that come along with these men who look perfect in their story in the series, but it could be a big self-inflicted disaster if we think of befriending them in actual life?
Most of these men are charming narcissists who camouflage their toxic traits with superficial charm.
Here are 11 such men from popular shows we have watched that didn't deserve the kind of love and empathy that we as fans showered on them.
1. Zaroon from Zindagi Gulzar Hai
The most charming men sometimes hide regressive and conservative monsters inside them. Zaroon, who comes to college in an expensive car, can easily charm and bewitch any woman he likes. He is backed by an influential family in Karachi but in no way he can be called the 'ideal man'. He likes to control women in his life. He calls off his engagement with Asmara because she wasn't willing to be a docile housewife for him. By the end of the show, he does look like a lovely man who changes for good for his self-sufficient and confident wife, Kashaf, but he still reeks of sexism! (But wait, Fawad Khan! *Dreamy eyes*!)
2. Joe from You
When they said to do all you can in the name of love, no one mentioned the boundaries for Joe Goldberg from You. Apart from coming across as a deeply troubling, terrifying man, he is a perpetual law offender, murderer, stalker, and obsessive, manipulative man. While his exterior looks soft, and he may come across as a man dedicated to someone he loves, one can't deny that he is toxic and dangerous.
3. Owen from Grey's Anatomy
A fan on Reddit described Owen as 'a man obsessed with having a baby'. Well, that's believable. While Owen came across as a 'nice guy' on Shonda Rhimes' show in earlier episodes, he soon became a near-unforgivable jerk.
He doesn't believe in monogamy as he doesn't cheat on his partners at his convictions, and this romantic flip-flop of his character arc hasn't made him very likable. While fans were almost okay forgiving him for his fatherhood fantasies, his over-complicated nature was later deemed downright toxic! It's high time Shonda Rhimes either writes him off or sends him off with a closure that the audience too right deserves.
4. Ted Mosby from How I Met Your Mother
Okay, before you start showering the comments section with hateful comments, let me at least defend!
Ted, who was often shown as the 'good guy' was thoroughly obsessed with finding 'the one." He kept chasing women relentlessly, and consent was a big issue since he wouldn't take no for an answer. He has broken up with women in his life for selfish reasons, and till the very end, he kept chasing the 'right one' without focusing very little on at least trying to be a 'better person.
5. Ross Geller from Friends
Okay, let me tell you I love the show as much as you love it. However, Ross' toxic masculinity can't be brushed under the carpet. Ross's the eternal 'nice guy' of Television, but if you take a closer look at him, you'll identity several red flags! He reeks of having a fragile male ego. With his antics, he victimizes himself too often and tries to prove to everyone in his life that he is the 'man.' He often hurts people without caring very little about they would feel. He is also an insecure boyfriend who couldn't even tolerate his girlfriend having a 'friendly' male colleague.
6. Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory
Come on! This one doesn't even need any justification. Sheldon is perpetually condescending, rude, and blunt. He also comes across as a person who boasts of a superiority complex, and on many occasions, he has tried to portray that he is this 'know it all' person that makes him better than all of his friends.
7. Michael Scott from The Office
Let's acknowledge that Michael Scott was a toxic boss whose problematic behavior created a toxic work environment for his peers. He never thought twice before making nasty and personal remarks on his co-workers. In many episodes, he often comes across as a crude, sexist, and deeply insecure man. He also keeps secrets from his employees that indeed don't him the 'best boss' 'n the world.
8. Adil Khanna from Made In Heaven
Adil Khanna, Tara's philandering husband, thinks he is entitled to showcase entitled behavior with everyone in his life, including his wife, Tara. He is manipulative and believes that whatever he does will never have consequences for others connected to his life.
9. Mr. Big AKA John Preston from Sex And The City
Mr. Big'scharacter all through the seasons and the films have reeked of palpable toxic quality. While many fans defended his character as if he 'is who he is,' he made hasty decisions in his life even though it affected Carrie's life.
Big puts Carrie through endless drama only to make her realize that he is the 'one' for her. While Aidan could have been the perfect partner for Carrie, it was Big'stoxic charm that made Carrie fall back on him every time!
10. Cory Ellison from The Morning Show
Yes, I love Cory Elison, and his 'chaos is the new cocaine' drama and the very fact that he is always on his toes to make things right at UBA, but one can' deny that he makes friendships at his convenience. He manipulates his co-workers and tricks them into believing the facts that he stirs up for them. He hides things from Bradley Jackson, who, in return, has always trusted him as a friend. Cory has good business acumen and is probably one of the strongest pillars of the show, but he for sure isn't the man you can befriend and count on!
11. Alex Karev from Grey's Anatomy
Yes, he's the one who broke up with his wife Joe with just a letter. In the initial seasons, you despise Alex for being a philanderer, but by the time Christina says goodbye to Grey Sloan Memorial hospital, you realize he has a heart that's in the right place. However, on many occasions, Alex has proved to be someone who can't be trusted. He time and again sabotages his relationships while trying to be the 'perfect man'.
