Tigmanshu Dhulia Revisits GOW, Shares The Story Behind His Iconic Dialogue 'Tumse Na Ho Payega'

When Ramadhir Singh in Gangs Of Wasseypur said, "Beta, tumse na ho payega," we all immediately felt his frustration and impatience.

"Jab tak is desh mein cinema hai, log chutiya bante rahenge" is another dialogue that instantly gained a cult fan following. The man who mouthed these iconic dialogues and is behind several acclaimed films like Paan Singh Tomar, Haasil and Saheb and Biwi Aur Gangster among others is Tigmanshu Dhulia.

Tigmanshu Dhulia in an interesting chat with Indiatimes revisited GOW and told us that the dialogue he mouthed after his son JP tells him that he went to watch DDLJ was not a part of the script.

"This dialogue was improvised then and there and I am grateful to Anurag Kashyap for that. Anurag has a great quality of giving his actors creative freedom. When he thinks that any improvisation is working, he encourages it."

He added that he had the freedom to pick his own accent too. "In Gangs¡­ I said that I will not carry a Bihari accent, mai awadhi bolunga kyunki mai Allahabad se hun. I believe improvisation is only possible with actors who have the facility of language. If you are stuck with what I am going to say next then it¡¯s not going to work out."

Ramadhir Singh is one of those villains we all secretly love. Dhulia says he still doesn't know why he said yes to the role. "I remember 15-20 days before shooting was scheduled to start in Banaras, the prosthetic people came down at my place and were like ¡®Aaapka measurement lena hai¡¯ and I was like 'kyun¡¯ and they said 'kyunki aapko old dikhna hai'. I took a deep breath and then finally landed on set. The very next moment I was in the shoes of ¡®Ramadhir Singh¡¯s¡¯ character smoothly because everybody made me extremely comfortable on set."

Not Irrfan, Manoj Bajpayee Was Dhulia's First Choice For Haasil

He made his directorial debut with Haasil, a film that's considered one of the best of Irrfan Khan's career. But did you know Irrfan wasn't the first choice for the role?

"Manoj Bajpayee is a dear friend. I approached him after Satya had been released and was a blockbuster. Manoj in response told me, ¡®Yaar villain nahi karna, hero banana hai¡¯. And I feel his decision was correct. I then without any second thought went on to approach Irrfan and he just as any other friend became my saviour," Tigmanshu shared with us.

Irrfan Khan was almost on the verge of quitting films. He was fed up with doing similar roles when Haasil came his way. He essayed the role so well that the late actor won the Filmfare Best Villain Award.

Recalling his four decades of friendship with Irrfan, Dhulia got a little emotional as he said, "I lost a very dear friend. A friend with whom I could share everything, even my lows. When I had no clue about something, he was there to make me understand. He was that dost jiske saath aap sab kuch share kar sakte ho. That void can never be filled."

Haasil revolved around the politics of two gangs from a college and was directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia. He went on to work with Irrfan in Paan Singh Tomar, a film that won him a National Film Award. Dhulia knew he was writing this film for Irrfan.

"I was nursing this story for a long time and Irrfan knew about it. As we both shared a great bond it was an unsaid thing that if Paan Singh Tomar is made, it will be led by Irrfan and nobody else."

Even though Paan Singh Tomar won Best Feature Film and Irrfan bagged Best Actor at the National Film Awards, the film was highly criticized for promoting violence.

"Even cartoons have violence,¡± Tigmanshu defended himself. "You see Tom and Jerry, the way they fight using hammers. If you just show a character doing violent action and don¡¯t get his psyche, then you won¡¯t know the reason."

"Look at Sholay¡¯s Gabbar Singh. We never had a moment of him thinking, alone or introspecting. Agar wo hota to Gabbar Singh utna villain nahi hota. So I always try to figure out and put that in my script while explaining the roles to my actors. I tell them to understand the psyche of the character. Nobody is born a villain. Yes, the characters do have an option of not doing violence but not everybody is not solemnly made."

Despite doing both jobs excellently well, Dhulia says he enjoys directing more than acting. He also has no qualms in talking about his failures. "I faltered miserably in Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3. I did not make it properly."

The Saaheb Biwi Aur Gangster director is all set to entertain the audiences with his upcoming series Garmi.

The series has an ensemble cast of young actors namely Vyom Yadav, Puneet Singh, Veeneet Kumar and Jatin Goswami. We asked him what difficulties he faced with newcomers. Tigmanshu shared, "Following the storyline, it was given that I had to work with fresh faces. They were aged 20-22 with barely any theatre experience. Some had it, some didn¡¯t have it at all. It was a very different kind of experience because they did not really have a great acting background."

Tigmanshu also shared what young actors aren¡¯t able to bring to the plate. "Not blaming my actors but in general, the most annoying part of these youngsters is that they have very little concentration. They forget things in 10 seconds. I direct them to a simple sequence and they are lost within seconds. And this is with almost all of these young actors."
