Sayani Gupta is one actress who made her mark on her terms and
conditions. She has been making some smart career choices that have been receiving accolades and appreciation not only in India but internationally as well.
Her short film Shameless has made it to 93rd Oscars and everyone is heaping praises on her and the film.
Indiatimes got in touch with the actress and spoke to her about her excitement to reach Oscars, her journey and lot more.
When asked Sayani about her reaction to Oscars nomination, she said,
¡°My reaction is normal. It¡¯s good news but I am somebody who is not easily excited.
When asked that even Oscars don't make her excited, she replied,
¡°It¡¯s nice, I don¡¯t want to sound ungrateful but more than excited, I am grateful. The excitement really happens when the work happens, I get excited to get a new film, or when I start some new scene or character. Otherwise, I am little detached with other things.¡±(laughs)
Talking about how she landed this role, she said, ¡°Hussain Dalal (writer of the film) is a very dear friend and he told me that somebody called Keith was making this film and the I met him. I read the script and it was really a lovely idea, so I went ahead and I did it. Hussain is someone I blindly trust, especially his judgements. ¡°
There are lots of actors who are thankful to OTTs for giving them a platform and recognition, Sayani is one of them, she said,
¡°OTT has really changed everything, it has made space for talent and merit. Not just actors but even writers and directors. I don¡¯t think I will say I got my due because you really don¡¯t know what your due is, and I really wish I don¡¯t get my due so soon, especially now. I want to grow, only at the end of my life I want any due.
She further added,
¡°Definitely there is recognition, but if I had to look at my journey and goals, I am really grateful. But honestly what I wanted to do and what my journey should be, I have just started, I¡¯m taking baby steps toward that.¡±
We asked Sayani if she ever thought she would make it despite being an outsider, she said,
"I don¡¯t think you expect anything when you are starting out. It is a clean slate; I didn¡¯t even know what will I get. Every film I did , I never knew I will get, even now I can¡¯t predict anything, I might be bombarded with lot of great work and become the greatest actor to ever live or I could be no one and die with the work that I done and not getting my bit. So nobody knows what your journey will be, but you are hopeful. What I was hopeful for is keep working, and keep making exquisite cinema, keep growing as a an actor and really do amazing work and leave behind amazing pieces of cinema and art.
I came from a film school. I had a very realistic approach, I knew nobody will pounce on me and give me work. I knew it would be tough. I did what seemed right. I auditioned tirelessly and I still work vey tirelessly, I really work very hard and I enjoy it, there is nothing else I want to do apart from this.¡±
Lastly we quizzed Sayani if she is competitive towards her contemporaries, ¡°There is no space of competition in art. I am not here to compete with anyone. And I literally have recommended other people as many as 33 people for the same part which I auditioned for, so I am not competitive at all. I want to grow as an actor; I want to become a great actor. I can¡¯t be thinking of anyone else¡¯s journey, that will be so corrupt.¡±
Indeed, she is has come a long way.
