Rajinikanth, who is set to turn 74 on December 12, is the first Indian actor to have headlined films made in four different formats during his career. ¡®Superstar¡¯ made his big screen debut with Apoorva Raagangal, which was shot in black and white. The K Balachander-helmed Tamil drama featured him in a negative role and received rave reviews with critics lauding the emotional screenplay.

In 1977, Rajinikanth added a new dimension to his career with Sahodarara Savaal, his first colour film. The Kannada drama was directed by KSR Das and saw Rajinikanth share screen space with Vishnuvardhan. After this, Rajinikanth consolidated his standing in Tamil cinema with blockbusters such as Billa, Thee, Thillu Mullu, and Muthu.

After dominating the film industry over over two decades, Rajinikanth added a new dimension to his career with the 2014 period action drama Kochadaiiyaan. Soundaryaa Rajinikanth¡¯s magnum opus was shot using motion capture technology, which made it a step in a new direction for Rajinikanth. The film hit the screens amid fanfare but failed to live up to expectations at the box office

The Shankar -directed 2.0 .(2018) was another landmark release for Rajinikanth in this regard. The film, a sequel to Enthiran, was shot in 3D. This helped Rajinikanth become the first Indian actor to have headlined films in four different formats¨C colour, black and white, 3D, and motion capture/animation.

On the work front

Coming back to the present, Rajinikanth is going through a busy phase on the work front. He was last seen in Vettaiyan. The actioner, which hit the screens earlier this year, opened to a good response at the box office despite receiving mixed reviews. The film¡¯s cast included Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Manju Warrier, and Rana Daggubati. Rajinikanth will next be seen in Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.
