The first man to be executed by electric chair was William Kemmler, on August 6, 1890. He was convicted of murdering his lover, Matilda Ziegler, with an axe. After a charge of 700 volts was delivered, witnesses reported a smell of burnt clothing and charred flesh but Kemmler was far from dead.

Gertrude Ederle made history and rocketed to international stardom in 1926 when, at age 20, she became the first woman to swim the English Channel.
1945 - US Bombs Hiroshima
On August 6, 1945, during World War II, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The bomb, codenamed "Little Boy," was the first ever used in warfare and was dropped by a U.S. B-29 bomber named Enola Gay. The devastating attack had a profound impact on the course of history and the use of nuclear weapons.
