The Legend of Holika Dahan
According to Hindu mythology, there was a powerful demon king named Hiranyakashipu, who, like many other demons, desired immortality. To achieve this, he performed intense penance to please Lord Brahma, who granted him a unique boon. The blessing ensured that:
- He could not be killed by any creature created by Brahma.
- He could not die during the day or night.
- No weapon could kill him.
- He could not be destroyed on earth or in the sky.
- Neither humans, animals, gods, nor demons could harm him.
- He would possess immense power and be the sole ruler of creation.
With this boon, Hiranyakashipu became arrogant and cruel. He punished anyone who refused to worship him. However, his own son, Prahlad, was a devout devotee of Lord Vishnu and refused to acknowledge his father as a god.
Enraged by Prahlad*s unwavering faith, Hiranyakashipu made several attempts to kill him, but every attempt failed. One of his last efforts involved his sister, Holika.
According to the Vishnu Purana, Holika had received a special fireproof garment as a boon from Lord Brahma, which made her immune to fire. She tricked Prahlad into sitting on a burning pyre with her, intending to burn him alive. However, as Prahlad chanted Lord Vishnu*s name, the divine cloth flew off Holika and covered Prahlad, protecting him while Holika was consumed by the flames.
This event symbolises the victory of good over evil, which is celebrated with the ritual of Holika Dahan before the grand festival of Holi.
