Additionally, studies show that those with COVID-19 who had underlying liver illness (chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, or associated comorbidities) had a greater mortality risk than those who did not have preexisting liver disease.

How does Covid affect the liver?

A number of liver enzyme levels increase with COVID. The liver is harmed if these enzymes are present there in greater amounts.

According to a study, COVID-19-related hepatic injury should be defined as Alanine amino transaminase or Aspartate amino transaminase levels that are 3 times higher than the upper limit of the normal range, and ALP, -Glutamyl transpeptidase, or total bilirubin levels of these enzymes, with patients being classified as having hepatocellular, cholestatic, or mixed types of injury.

Additionally, the viral onslaught might have a serious negative impact on patients who have ongoing liver diseases. The immune system, which is already severely damaged, is unable to protect the body when there are already substantial health issues present, increasing the chance of infection. Also the drugs used to treat COVID may also seriously endanger liver function.

The incidence of severity on liver due to COVID is associated with comorbidities. Studies have found a condition called hepatic steatosis in most of the liver samples of COVID patients. Hepatic steatosis is an excessive buildup of fats in the liver. Hepatic steatosis is mostly associated with metabolic syndrome, diabetes, obesity and hypertension.

Has a weakened immune system because of HIV, autoimmune hepatitis, and organ transplant

Is very obese

Has type 2 diabetes

Has heart disease

Has kidney disease with dialysis

Has a lung disease like asthma or COPD

Has cancer

Has mood disorders like depression or bipolar disorder
