The Bottom Line: This is the way to go if you happen to heavily rely on your iOS device. And remember, you need 25 grand lying around for what is essentially a dock--albeit a great one!

JBL OnBeat Xtreme is simply put, the boss when it comes to mid-range iPad/iPhone/iTouch docks. You don't have to be a sound engineer to tell that this is a truly well put-together device. All you need is (preferably) an iPad and a pair of functional ears to experience the magic that ensues.

Design

While there's no doubting the great sound on offer from the OnBeat Xtreme, even its design is quite inspiring. The x-shape looks neat and curvy, and at the same time it's fairly compact for a dock that produces the kind of sound it does.

Besides, the rotating arm of this dock allows you to be entertained in the both landscape and portrait modes. It comes with convenient and sturdy rubber grips for iPad and iPhone/iTouch. These ensure that your device is always securely mounted on the dock.

Specs

In today's world, connectivity is key. This is something that the folks at JBL seem to have taken really seriously which is why the Bluetooth range on this device is simply amazing. It can sync with Bluetooth compatible devices for several feet as well!

What's more, you can even connect it to your computer while your iOS device is docked. This enables you to sync your iTunes with the device while it's charging on the dock. Apart from all this, it can also connect with your USB-enabled TV.

Oh, and most importantly, it offers great sound quality that comes with the usual plethora of settings!

Remote

The device in itself is so engaging that we probably wouldn't have noticed the lack of a remote--had there been one!. However, the OnBeat Xtreme comes with a nifty remote that snugly fits into your palm and it allows in-depth navigation through the system.

And if you want to take your remote usage to another level, you can also download a free app called JBL OnBeat. This is essentially a player for your iPad/iPhone/iTouch, and it works with the remote!

Verdict

I absolutely love the way this dock comes together as the ultimate sound system for an iOS device. For a device that is capable of doing so much, the OnBeat Xtreme is fairly uncomplicated. This makes it just as user-friendly as some of the lower-range docks.

Also, JBL has been known for its superior sound quality, so you know you are getting a decent product. Sure, it may not be a Bose or a B & W, but you will get bang for your buck with this one.

And speaking of buck, that's one thing that could deter those who are on the fence about going for this dock. While its price tag of INR 25,000 is well justified, it is a little too steep for an iPad dock. In fact you could get a 16GB iPad (Wi-Fi) in that price range.

Much like its price, the OnBeat Xtreme's size is also an issue that could see you waver in your opinion. Although this device is roughly the size and weight of an old-school boombox, is that really what you want from a device that is essentially a dock? Alternately, wouldn't you rather go for something bigger when it comes to your dedicated entertainment unit? Having said that, this is great for parties--especially outdoor shindigs--given its potential portability.

Well, the pros and cons list can be endless, as one can find just about any excuse not to buy this device! But all in all, I feel this is a good buy, since no matter how many cons you come up with, you will always find one extra pro.
